An Introduction To Projectors

A projector is an apparatus for presenting an enlarged image on a screen from a transparency such as a photographic slide or a film. In a motion picture projector, each frame is held stationary at an illuminated aperture for a brief period, and then advanced by an intermittent sprocket or reciprocating claw, the light being cut off by a rotating shutter during the movement. The soundtrack on the film is reproduced at a separate sound head where the film is moved continuously at a constant speed.

An average projector usually has a picture resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. Most of the projectors weigh four to six pounds and come with a carrying case. All of the projectors have varied brightness and contrast levels – usually the brightness varies from 1300 lumens to 1500 lumens. A projector with a brightness of 1400 lumens proves to be a good choice for small to medium-sized, well-lit rooms.

Some of the indispensable parts of a projector are the feed spool, xenon arc lamp, projection lens, optical sound head, take up spool, an aperture, normal lens and rotating shutter. But with the advancement of science, new technologies have come into play. The projectors have become much more advanced in terms of clarity of picture and quality of the pixels. Also, the projectors have found use in everyday households, as new versions of domestic projectors have arrived on the market. The abundance of LCD projectors, DLP projectors and video projectors has enabled the common man to enjoy the experience of a big theater hall in his living room.

Is Apologia Science Rigorous Enough for the College-Bound?

Are Apologia science textbooks rigorous enough for college-bound students?  Sure, they are popular with homeschoolers, but how GOOD are they as science books?

Apologia is a very rigorous college prep series.  I do not usually recommend specific curriculum, because I know it is all about “fit” more than a textbook.  When it comes to science, though, I had such success with the curriculum we used, that I really do recommend it – even to my clients that are not Christian.

I know it for a fact that Apologia is a great college preparation because Alex (my non-scientist son) was able to pass a CLEP in Biology 3 years after taking Apologia Biology at home.  He earned a 4.0 in Engineering Physics in college after taking Apologia Physics. Remember, he is NOT my science major.  I made him take that engineering physics at community college with his brother, because he was too young to take a class by himself.  So he learned well from the books even though he did not “love” science. Apologia is GREAT stuff.

I know for a fact that Apologia is great college preparation because my son Kevin is an electrical engineering major in college.  He still refers to his Apologia Physics book now and then.  He used Apologia chemistry over the summer, to review for a class he was taking.  He has reviewed his physics book frequently.  It is been one of my “best buys” for curriculum, because they have literally used them for 5 years. Kevin has a fabulous GPA in engineering, and I believe it is in part because he was so well prepared with Apologia Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

If you want to make Apologia even MORE rigorous, it is possible.  You can go through a book in a semester instead of a year, and make it an AP course if you want, but it is not necessary at all, just an option.  I have heard of some “college prep” AP classes, like through Pennsylvania Homeschoolers for example, that actually take a child 5 hours a day to complete.  That would be so frustrating to spend 5 hours a day on one class!  One mother was letting core subjects in reading, writing and math slide, just so her child could get an AP Chemistry credit.  That is a lot of work for not a lot of benefit.  It is easier to keep your subjects at the level of your children when they do it at home with a homeschool curriculum.

Apologia is a self-teaching homeschool curriculum, so kids can learn it on their own, and moms do not have to know what they are doing in order to be successful.  That is a big deal, because I did not have a clue about physics, and barely was able to keep up with the chemistry.

Yes, absolutely Apologia is college prep.  It is not perfect, because no curriculum is perfect.  All textbooks have typos- ALL of them – and I am sure someone could find a flaw in these books like you can find a flaw in every book.  Still it is great preparation, and I recommend it even for my clients that are not Christian.

Facts to Consider About the Computer Power Supply Unit

Computer PSU’s provide constant electricity to the computer allowing it to work properly and these units are considered crucial if you own a computer. There are many facts about PSU’s that not many people know about and this article is going to elaborate on some facts about computer power supply units.

The life span of the device is measured in mean time between failures. Higher mean time between failures is always preferred since they ensure a long life span. Power supplies often last lesser then what the manufactures suggest. While an ordinary computer PSU has a life span of 100,000 operating house, some PSU’s have a life span of 200,000 operating house. These numbers are rough estimates of the life of these units and due to various factors the life span of a power supply unit can be reduced by 50%.

A computer power supply that has sleeved cable looks aesthetically pleasing. Sleeved cables are easier to clean and maintain hence they are preferred by many people. These sleeved cables also prevent detrimental effects on air flow hence they are often recommended over normal cables.

A greater power capacity that is greater output wattage is not always good and ideally a computer power supply unit should have a wattage that is not too low or too high. Extremely high output is usually of no use and extremely low wattage units do not function optimally. Greater output wattage does not ensure that the extra electricity is used for high end graphic cards.

A good computer PSU should supply adequate electricity to all the parts of the computer and not to just one specific part. A good power supply unit should have added features like short circuit protection, under voltage protection, over voltage protection, over temperature protection and over current protection.

The History of Colin’s Jeans Brand

The history of made to measure jeans by Colin’s started in 1983 when a Turkish businessman Nurettin Eroglu and his four brothers established a small garment manufacture called “Eroglu Holding”. Originally the factory produced coats and down jackets, but in 1986 the first jeans were manufactured there. That year the trademark “Kulis” was introduced. The production grew and by 1992 the company manufactured 1500 pairs of jeans a day. The brand was that year renamed and called “Colin’s Jeans”. The first sewing factory occupying a space of 10.000 square kilometers was opened.

In 1993 the company begins to export its jeans abroad. Today Colin’s Jeans are sold in the USA, Western and Eastern Europe, Russia and Middle East.

Colin’s Jeans brand has chosen the right marketing strategy from the start. Unlike other Turkish manufacturers of denim, Colin’s Jeans brand didn’t try to copy jeans models produced by world established companies. Instead of this the brand made inexpensive clothes of good quality and advertised for its own trademark. This policy contributed to the success of the brand all over the world.

By the end of the 1990s Colin’s Jeans already had 11 shops in Turkey and 6 shops abroad. The brand also introduced a new more expensive denim line called “Loft”. In 1997 Central Office and trading center Marka&Marka in Istanbul were opened. According to the conception Marka&Marka Eroglu started production for the leading world manufacturers of custom tailored jeans: Levi’s, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, Next, Polo, GAP, Ralph Lauren, Lee Cooper, Matalan and Liz Clairbone. In 1998 a factory occupying a space of 35.000 square kilometers was opened, followed by the largest denim clothes manufacturing factory in Europe opened in 2003 and occupying a space of 45.000 square kilometers, capable of producing 17 million of clothes pieces a year. In 2005 Eroglu Company Group bought one of the biggest jeans brands in Europe “Big Star”, fortifying its positions on the world markets.

Today the company is represented in 33 countries and has more than 24.000 employees. The brand produces men’s, women’s and children’s clothes and each season introduces more than 2000 models of customized jeans for the new collection, following the latest trends of the world fashion. Colin’s represents an entire production cycle, including draft designing of jeans models, construction, curve gradation, sewing of clothes pieces, packing and delivery of ready goods to the customers. The most progressive technologies of processing and dye are used in Colin’s Jeans manufactory.

The product range includes jeans, denim jackets, shirts, skirts, waistcoats, dresses, shorts, overalls, as well as cotton and knitted wear like tops, T-shirts, sweaters, smocks. Colin’s also continues to manufacture outer garments, coats and jackets. Clothes for children and various accessories also belong to the product palette of the company.

The brand now has 300 shops in Turkey and more than 1000 abroad, thus becoming a rightful competitor of the leading world denim brands.

How to Choose the Water Temperature When Doing Laundry

If you’ve ever looked at all the knobs and buttons on your washing machine it can be a bit confusing to choose between so many different options. One of the options you will need to choose is the water temperature when washing your clothes. Learn how to choose the water temperature when doing laundry here, to get your clothes clean, without damaging them.

There are some preliminary matters you should understand when trying to make a decision about what temperature water to use when washing your clothes. There are some advantages and disadvantages to using either hot or cold water. Here are the pros and cons of using hot water while doing laundry:

  • Pro – generally, hot water cleans and removes stains better from clothing than cold water. (The exception to this is protein based stains, such as blood, which are set by hot water.)
  • Con – hot water is tougher on your clothes, making them wear and fade faster.
  • Con – hot water costs more, because of the energy costs to heat it, than using cold water for laundry, meaning it also less environmentally friendly.

The pros and cons of cold water are basically just the opposite of the pros and cons of using hot water for washing your clothes. You will save money by using cold water because of lower energy bills and from less wear and tear on your clothing, but some of this savings may be offset by your need to buy special detergent formulated to dissolve and work well in cold water, especially if you have hard water in your area. In addition, your clothes will most likely not come out quite as clean, and may retain more stains than if you use hot water to wash.

Once you understand these pros and cons the main thing you need to consider when determining what water temperature to use when doing your laundry is what the clothing tags on the items you are washing say. Remember, you can always wash something in colder water than allowed, but I do not recommend washing any garment in hotter water than the care label says is safe.

On older tags the label might say something like “machine wash.” This statement, since it did not mention a specific temperature, means you can wash the clothing in whatever temperature you want, including hot. However, if the tag says something like “machine wash warm,” then the tag is saying the hottest water you should use is warm water, but not hot water.

Further, newer tags don’t always use words, but instead use symbols. Three dots inside the washing machine symbol means you can wash with hot water, which is defined as water that is 120 degrees Fahrenheit (or 50 degrees Celsius). Two dots inside the washing machine symbol means you can wash in warm water, which is defined as water that is 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius). Finally, one dot in the washing machine symbol means you should only wash this garment in cold water, which is defined as water that is 85 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

I hope that with this information you will be able to choose the water temperature when doing laundry, to effectively clean your clothes, save money and energy, and keep the clothing undamaged in the process.

Why People Hate Boxing

OK, hate is a strong word – but it’s clear that boxing is currently is currently low on people’s list of favorite sports. Some people will tell you that boxing is too violent, has too much corruption, and is too primitive to survive. I say that none of these explain boxing’s current state. Don’t let the recent Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather, Jr. super fight fool you, the health of boxing still requires dire attention.

How did boxing get in this “sick” state? The reasons may surprise you.

Any institution must be built on solid ground – boxing is no different. In any professional sport, the talent base is sourced from a large pool of willing, young athletes who are then trained at a semi-professional level. Boxing’s talent base is urban and rural as well as national and global. However, the talent base is not the primary issue, it’s where the talent comes from and where it has gone.

“Where the talent comes from” Because of its historical roots as a socio-political platform, unlike any other sport in American history, boxing moves people like no other. Whether it was African-American hero Joe Louis fighting German Max Schmelling for the world heavyweight championship at the height of World War II, the politically-radical Muhammad Ali fighting the politically-neutral Joe Frazier during the later stages of the Civil Rights era, or the 1984 U.S. Olympic boxing team running away with gold medals during the Cold War, boxing has long been a vessel for Americans to show their might literally and figuratively, through a single man or group of men.

As the sports world has become more and more global, many non-Americans (i.e. Mexicans in the lower weight classes, and Eastern Europeans in the higher ones) have started to make their fistic presence felt over the past several years. Outside of die-hard fans, interest in weight classes largely populated by international fighters has confounded the major networks and sponsors who historically tried to cultivate Madison Avenue-friendly, cross-over American fighters to carry the sport (see Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya) and capture the general sports fan. The major networks and casual boxing fans often wanted their fighters to look, sound, and represent them in some way. As many now do not, people gradually have lost that zeal for the sport. And as zeal is lost, the all-important TV ratings dip, causing sponsors to drop out and networks to drop boxing programming.

“Where it has gone” Speaking of programs, whatever happened to the U.S. National Boxing Team? Affiliation with this team was often a pipeline to success in the ring at the amateur level, and ultimately, as a professional. Historically, the “minor league of American boxing,” membership on the national boxing team was seen as a a privilege. Young fighters not only participated in the world championships and global tournaments across the globe, but were on the short-list of fighters with the opportunity to collect the sport’s holy grail – an Olympic gold medal. This long-cherished booty was like obtaining one’s degree from Harvard, in terms of the doors that it opened. Boxing’s greatest modern stars, including Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya, were all gold-medal winning athletes who used the trinket as the springboard to lucrative contracts, advertising deals, and television exposure.

Where did this pipeline go and why did it vanish? Simple: over the years, the Olympics lost its luster as must-see TV. When Olympic sports coverage in general declined, amateur boxing suffered as well. With this decline, membership on the U.S. National Boxing Team and the value of the boxing gold lost their luster. As a result, television coverage declined, and fighters lost this “free” promotional vehicle. With the weakening of this amateur pipeline, professional boxing was often left to cultivate fighters from scratch. The results have been mixed, at best.

The biggest benefactors have been professional basketball and football. Since the early 1900s, boxing has often been a “gateway (to socio-econmic inclusion)” sport for the disadvantaged, especially ethnic and racial minorities. Dominated early on by the disenfranchised descendants of Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants and later by African-Americans, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans, professional boxing in the U.S. has historically been a platform for members of isolated ethnic groups to garner world fame and riches. However, as the prominence of the sport gradually declined over the years (i.e. after the ’80s “golden age”), it was no longer seen as the ideal avenue to athletic renown or wealth. With their guaranteed contracts and endorsement opportunities, professional basketball and football began to trump boxing in the ’80s, as a safer and more profitable alternative to greener pastures outside of the ghetto for many ethnic and racial minorities, who have historically dominated the sport.

These same groups, socio-economically, have continued to dominate the sport, but the major difference is that they have increasingly come from overseas. Much to the chagrin of the major television and cable networks, and some jingoistic fans, the sport has been siphoned into ethnic, global enclaves – with many American fighters toiling in relative obscurity. The heavyweight division is the greatest example of this, with many Eastern European fighters now dominating the rankings. Muhammad Ali and his “world-touring” tendencies – fighting in places like Kinshasa, Zaire against George Foreman to Manila, Philippines against Smokin’ Joe Frazier, truly globalized the sport for the better. Although Americans are very inclusive in many ways, we have come to learn that when it comes to boxing in general, and heavyweights in particular, they often want their boxers as American as apple pie.

The Networks The effect that the media and Hollywood has had on the sport’s sagging popularity can not be overlooked. Rarely is a balanced view of the sweet science given. At best, boxing has often been depicted on screen as the epitome of the gladiator spirit, a caricature even – with two fighters punching each other at will until one falls. At worst, it’s depicted as the armpit of sports, filled with exploitative promoters, fixed fights, bad decisions, criminal athletes, and ring fatalities. Boxing is often cast as the usual suspect when any politician (genuine or not) wants to point out corruption in sports. These factors have not helped reduce the “black eye” that has blurred people’s view over the past decade.

I have already chronicled the decline of amateur boxing on network television. However, this decline wasn’t limited to the amateurs. As a teenager, I remember watching boxing shows nearly every Saturday or Sunday afternoon on ABC’s Wide World of Sports, CBS or NBC. Those days are distant memories. The only network boxing that you will find are a handful of cards on FOX TV – usually mere showcase bouts for former star boxers (like Mike Tyson or James Toney most recently) looking to resuscitate their careers. The explanation that the networks give is that everything comes down to Nielsen ratings – that people don’t watch boxing like they use to. The question that really needs to be asked is: why don’t they? The reasons are many, but greed and impatience are two of the the biggest culprits.

The greed of promoters looking to cash out by signing the most lucrative deal for their fighter(s) has created a situation in which everyone is looking for that big, premium cable deal. Rather than take the long, hard road of fighting for shorter money on network television to build a following as many fighters had done pre-1990, the cable and PPV boon of the late 80s-early 90s created a new arena for fighters to fight less often and make more money. You can’t blame the fighters, who are plying the most brutal trade in sports, with limited benefits and long-term security. However, this shortsighted business model being driven by the promoters and the cable network chieftains has adversely affected the long-term health of the sport. As the quantity of “pay” boxing has increased, the quality of fights has gone down. Due to infrequent fighting schedules, leading to rusty boxers and carefully selected matches for overly-protected “cash-cow” fighters, boxing fans are being victimized – paying to watch over-priced and over-hyped fights that don’t live up to their billing. How many times have you heard someone say, “I can’t believe that I shelled out $44.95 for this crap?”

I have chronicled the reasons why the broader sports world hates the sport, and it’s going to take more than Senator John McCain’s proposal for federal oversight or “few-and-far-between” mega-fights like Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather to stem this tide.

How to stop hate To regain the “love” of boxing, the Olympics need to be promoted more heavily by the networks carrying them, in order to cultivate American boxing stars. At the professional level, the networks need to carry more boxing cards in order to compete with the cable networks, including PPV. For one, we know that HBO and Showtime can’t beat the pricing of ABC, CBS or NBC – hence the networks competitive advantage. If “free” television were to hire programmers who know boxing, slowly boost ratings among the die-hard fan niche, which will then lead to larger shows – cable television networks would be forced to re-think their model which often showcases single fighters at the expense of many fighters and exploits die-hard fans with a glut of pay-per-view cards to line their coffers.

If we start here, maybe we can get somewhere. If we don’t, my beloved sport will go the way of the dinosaur, and there will be no Steven Spielberg to re-create it.

Female Nudity and Morality

I am a family man with an 8-month old daughter yet I am not afraid to tell you that nudity still allures me. Let me clarify what I am trying to say. When I look at a nude female child or a nude old-aged woman, I don’t feel the sexual arousal within me. If I look at any nude female at a growing age, my mind might get diverted as I am a human being.

Let me compare the reaction modes to see my wife being nude with that of a celebrity:

If I look at my wife and act on my impulses, nothing will happen as I have already got the social and legal license to consider her as my better half. If I look at somebody else in a nude mode and convey my interest, then I’ll be convicted socially, legally and morally. In fact, I personally believe that in both the cases, if I express my lust – it is unacceptable and if I express my adoration to nudity as a higher form of art, it might be acceptable. It depends on my attitude towards women – whether I respect them in the spiritual sense. If I do that I can respect my wife and others in the same way.

In the art forms in the human history, nudity has always been adored as a beauty but criticized as a source of arousal to sensual pleasure.

Pornographic and Semi-pornographic movies

We tend to criticize every bold move of a woman as we still consider them dominated at this patriarch society. If I or any male character appears nude, there will be almost no chance of criticism. If a woman appears nude in a movie or in an advertisement, there will be a social volcanic eruption.

Morality

We are in an era where there is a congestion of pornographic movies; semi-pornographic movies all around the box offices. We as cynics, raise our eyebrows against them as they are prone to bring moral degradation in our social system.

We tend to forget that wine shops open up every now and then as people want them. Similarly, this category of movies is getting released every now and then as people want them. I know that I’ll protest against all these in the Social Media but quietly I’ll collect the CD of these movies or search the internet to look at it. Our hypocrisy knows no bounds. If we are really serious about being moral, let us rectify our own characters rather criticizing those who are involved in making these movies.

We read in the New Testament that an adulterous woman was brought before Jesus in order to take the permission to stone her to death. Jesus asked her to be stoned by someone who has never sinned in his life. No one could come in front and lo – Jesus told her that – “Your Sins Are Forgiven”. Jesus, being sinless was able to forgive the sins of an adulterous woman whereas we as born sinners look out for others faults. Bible tells us: “Do not judge others, or else you shall also be judged by God”.
