What Are Functional Skills And Why Does My Child With A Disability Need Them?

Are you concerned that your child with a disability is not learning
academics at a grade and age level pace? Have you thought that your
child may benefit from a curriculum of functional skills? Would you
like to learn about a resource that can help you learn more about
functional curriculums for your child in special education? This
article will discuss functional skills, functional academics, why your
child with a disability needs them, and a resource for more

Functional skills are defined as skills that can be used everyday, in
different environments. Functional skills focus on different areas
such as home (cooking, cleaning etc) family, self help skills
(Bathing, brushing teeth, dressing, grooming), employment, recreation,
community involvement, health, and functional academics. All students
with disabilities will benefit from functional skill training, to help
them in their adult life.

Functional academics are also important for children with
disabilities, who may not be able to learn age and grade appropriate
academics. Functional academics are defined as academic areas that
will be used by the student for the rest of their life. For example:
Reading (read signs; stop, go, mens, womens, read a recipe). Math
(Money, grocery shopping, making change, budget). Health (grooming,
oral hygiene, plan healthy meals). A wonderful resource to learn more
about functional skills, and functional curriculums to help children
with special needs is the book entitled Functional Curriculum for
Elementary, Middle, and Secondary Age Students with Special Needs.
The book is Edited by Paul Wehman and John Kregal, and is a resource
that you will use again and again.

Your child with a disability needs functional skills because these
skills will have meaning for your child, and will help them be as
independent as possible, as an adult. For example: Every child eats,
and being able to cook or prepare simple foods will help them be more
independent. If children learn simple household chores, these skills
can be turned into job skills when they get older. For example: My
daughter Angelina, who has a severe disability, learned how to fold
towels when she was in elementary school. When Angelina entered high
school she had a job folding towels at the high school pool. Because
Angelina already had the functional skill of folding towels, the
transition to a job folding towels was pretty easy. Angelina also
learned that when she worked hard folding towels, she was paid. On pay
day, she was able to spend the money that she made at her job.
Learning functional skills that can be turned into work is critical
for all children with disabilities. They will gain pride by being able
to work, and will understand the connection between work and money.

By learning what functional skills are and why they are important,
will help your child as they grow into adulthood. Do not be afraid to
bring up functional skill training for your child, when you are
participating in IEP meetings. Your child is depending on you to help
them be a happy fulfilled adult!

How to Find Things to Sell on Amazon

The question is, how to find things that sell and ship quickly on Amazon? One problem that people have is that when they find to a category they become overwhelmed by all the choices they have to choose from. Some products literally have thousands of choices to pick from. Comparing all the different products and prices to other similar products listed on Amazon can be mind-boggling. To say the least, it can be very time consuming.

The best approach is to search for a wholesaler’s catalog, which are available online, from many suppliers – many will drop-ship for you also. Unfortunately, many items are not available at a price that makes it profitable to sell. By scrutinizing the different products you will find items that catch your eye. By comparing these items to Amazon you will find if they are inexpensive enough to be profitable.

How to zero-in on items that can be profitable- when looking at thousand of products – is the real question? Looking through thousands of items to find a product that can be profitable can be difficult and time consuming. Here are some tips that will assist you in finding good items to sell.

1) Avoid searching through categories that are restricted by Amazon. Restricted items consist of beauty items, grocery products, jewelry, health and personal care, watches and some items that are popular to be counterfeited. Once you become experienced in selling on Amazon – then you can start adding the restricted categories to the items you are selling. The reason for this is Amazon can be difficult to work with so by avoiding the restricted categories in the beginning you will avoid a lot of headaches. Amazon has some requirements that you will be able to meet after you have sold some items on Amazon.

2) Ignore items that are dominated by big brand names because it will be very hard to find these products at a price that makes it profitable for you to sell them. Remember, in business – Time is money. Avoid categories like cell-phone accessories and computer components etcetera.

3) Ignore categories that target general items that directed at the sexes, like clothing. Some specialty items may be okay but try to avoid general items like socks, t-shirts and underwear etcetera.

4) Look for items that appeal to a special type of hobby or need. Try to target a specialty niche or sub-niche to search for products to sell. Items in the home surveillance category may be something to consider, especially in the atmosphere of danger that exists in our world today.

When you find a potential item in a wholesaler’s catalog you can easily check out the profitability by copying the description from the catalog and pasting it in the Amazon search box for price comparison. Once you find the right product, be sure there is an ample supply of the product so you can meet any potential demand. Amazon frowns on sellers that cannot provide the products they are selling.

History of the Cheerleader Uniform

Though you might not believe it by the outfits today, cheerleading uniforms started out very conservatively. At the turn of the twentieth century the majority of cheerleaders were male, and they did not wear uniforms but just participated wearing street clothes. Women did join the ranks of cheerleaders, and as they did the cheerleading uniforms they wore were appropriate for the day. There is a postcard from Cornell University, printed in 1906, that shows a female cheerleader carrying a school banner, wearing a very conservative outfit in school colors – a long sleeved dress with a high neckline and long, flowing skirt.

In the beginning stages of cheerleading, uniforms often consisted of a sweater (usually a cardigan) and the school letters on the front. Sometimes a turtleneck shirt would be layered under the cardigan sweater for additional warmth for cheerleaders outdoors. A megaphone (a device used to amplify the voices of the cheerleaders) would often accompany the cheerleading uniforms and they would have the school letters on them as well. Pom poms, another popular cheerleading accessory, started to appear as a part of the cheerleading uniform in the 1930’s. The original pom poms were made of paper – Fred Gastoff invented vinyl pom poms in 1965.

In the beginning stages of cheerleading, the male cheerleaders would wear trousers while the women would wear ankle length wool skirts. In the 1950’s the lengths of the skirts began to get shorter but were still on the conservative side. Saddle shoes were the footwear of choice for female cheerleaders. Male cheerleaders would often wear flat, canvas sneakers.

During the 1960’s the length of skirts changed – the below the knee length skirts worn as the uniform for female cheerleaders gave way to shorter, pleated skirts. Cotton began being used as the fabric of choice for cheerleading uniform skirts, and the use of cotton made the skirts lighter and made for easier movement. Cardigan sweaters were replaced by crew neck sweaters that were often short sleeved. You would usually find the school letters on the sweaters but some squads would incorporate the name of the cheerleader on the cheerleading uniform sweaters as well.

As time progressed, cheerleading became more organized and the routines became more complicated. Cheerleaders needed to have uniforms that allowed for more freedom of movement. During the 1970’s most cheerleading squads began to wear athletic sneakers instead of the old fashioned saddle shoes. Instead of sweaters with the school letters, some cheerleading uniforms were sweaters with stripes in the school colors, while some squads moved to wearing vests instead of sweaters. The 1970’s also was the time when the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders became a part of popular culture, with their skimpy, form fitting cheerleading uniforms consisting of boots, white hot pants (short-shorts) and long sleeved blue button up shirts that revealed their waists.

During the 1980’s the necklines of cheerleading uniform sweaters were more often than not v-neck lines instead of the traditional crew necklines. During the 1990’s the length of the skirts became even shorter to provide better freedom of movement for the jumps, lifts and tumbling skills that are a part of cheerleading routines. To determine how short is too short when it comes to the length of skirts in cheerleading uniforms, most squads followed a rule that the cheerleading skirt would end no shorter than the fingertips when the arms were held at the cheerleader’s side. Turtlenecks were often left out as a part of the cheerleading uniform.

The materials used in today’s cheerleading uniforms are polyester, or a combination of polyester and spandex. The cheerleading uniform top is form fitting, but depending on the squad it could be short sleeved, long sleeved or even sleeveless. The National Federation of High Schools have a rule that the tops worn by cheerleaders must cover their midriffs when their arms are resting at their sides, a change from the tops of the 1970’s and 1980’s that would show off the abdomen of the cheerleader. Cutouts on the chest, shoulders, back or arms are allowed in today’s cheerleading uniforms. Skirts are about 12 to 14 inches in length, but most women wear briefs in a school color under the skirt for modesty. Some cheerleaders refer to these briefs as lollies or spankies.

Even though the styles of cheerleading uniforms have changed through the years, there is one thing that has remained constant – a cheerleader will be decked out in his or her school colors to show spirit and loyalty while leading a crowd in cheers.

Family Life in the 18th Century

Marriage, children, economic circumstances and social status were closely linked during the 1700s. The majority of families were what the famed English author Daniel Defoe termed “the middling class” or the middle class, a status of family that was non-existent before the 18th century. During the 1600s people were either wealthy and privileged or utterly poor and there was no in-between whatsoever. The rise of the middle class began during the 18th century and its impact upon family was enormous.

Women and men of the upper classes did not marry for love. Instead, they married strictly for financial and social reasons. Women who wished to continue living within a wealthy household simply did not marry a man of the middle or lower class. A self-respecting gentleman didn’t even consider marrying a woman from a poor family. It was unlikely she would possess the social graces and dowry required to marry into such a society. Moreover, rumors would abound as to why a wealthy young man would wed a girl of such poor means. Perhaps he had gotten her “in the family way” and was inclined to do right by her? Such humiliation could never be visited upon his family.

The middle class on the other hand could marry whomever they liked. It wasn’t sensible for a middle-class women to marry a poor man since her children would be raised in poverty, yet if her happiness depended upon it, her family was unlikely to intervene. There was no need to marry for social status or wealth since the middle class did not possess either.

Yet the concept of the middle class was still one of privilege. Up until the 18th century childhood, like the middle class, did not exist. The lower class worked hard to eke out a living and their children were expected to work alongside them. School was a privilege that only the upper class could afford. And well into the 18th century childhood still did not exist for the lower class.

The Industrial Revolution set into motion incredible changes in 1700s society. The vast majority of people who worked inside of the new factories producing items such as farm equipment, clothing and toys were of the lower class. Not surprisingly, lower class children also worked inside of these factories earning far less than their parents’ meager wage. Children labored as hard as their parents, often carrying heavy loads of materials or sitting at industrial machines for countless hours inside of deplorable factory conditions. Had the term “sweatshop” been coined at that time, then it would indeed have described the factories where these lower class families labored.

The middle and upper classes however did not set foot inside of a factory. Children of the middle class began to attend school for the first time in history. Only famers’ children took time away from school for significant periods in order to assist with the sowing and harvesting of crops during the summer and autumn months.

The dominant household figure was the father. It was he who determined whether or not his wife could work outside the home or whether or not his children were to attend school. He owned all of the family’s property and money. Divorce was exceedingly rare since women who left their husbands had no viable means of survival. Mothers usually remained at home, keeping a hearth and producing several children. Their job was not an easy one. Mothers cleaned the house, made clothing for their families by hand, cooked, minded the children, tended a garden and generally tried to please their husbands. Womens’ social status was well below that of mens’ and they seldom questioned any of their husbands’ decisions.

Yet many upper and middle class families were quite content during the 18th century. The Industrial Revolution generated excitement about new technologies meant to make life easier. Marriages were usually harmonious, children were treated kindly and a belief in God was extremely important. The inherent goodness in people provided a solid backbone for families and produced a law-abiding and civilized society in which families flourished.

I Am a Woman – Is Lifting Weights Bad for Me?

Many times women feel that if they exercise too much and do weight training they will become less feminine. This is far from true! Exercise and lifting weights are necessary to get the type of body that we as women want – nice lean limbs and healthy looking skin. It is so hard to lose the weight we need to lose without adding exercise. By doing small amounts of exercise each day, or every other day, you are making it easier to burn off more calories than you consume.

Having better muscle tone will increase your metabolism. Metabolism is the speed at which our bodies burn off calories. When we increase our muscle tone our metabolism increases and we burn calories better, even while we are asleep. Muscle also takes up less space than fat, so when we get rid of the fat and replace it with muscle are limbs look leaner. When you start exercising and building muscles, you may notice that you are not losing weight, but you should also notice that your clothes fit differently. This is because the muscle is replacing the fat and you're actually losing inches. Muscle weighs more than fat, but it takes up less space. This is better than losing pounds, because you can actually see the difference.

As you exercise you are burning off stored up fat and this gives you more energy. Exercise also reduces stress and helps you to sleep better at night. Regular exercise also improves your skin tone. As you exercise and build muscle tone you increase your immune system as well increase your stamina. Your heart will thank you. If you have not exercised in a while, check with your doctor before beginning any type of exercise plan.

Muscles need protein, so make sure that you eat protein with every meal and snack. This does not have to be a steak or hamburger or some type of beef, you can get protein from other meats as well as beans. In fact, you should try to have several meals throughout the week that are built around beans and vegetables. Foods that are high in fiber and protein take more energy to digest therefore your metabolism increases, plus they take longer to digest which makes you feel fuller longer.

Speaking of eating, if you're trying to lose weight, you need to eat five smaller meals per day. Most successful diet plans include three meals plus two snacks. You want to keep your body burning those calories all day long. Think of your body as a furnace, a fat burning furnace. It needs fuel throughout the day to burn efficiently.

If you are new to the job of drop shipping and you are taking into account that this as an online resource for income, possibly you may be thinking about the risks that are tangled into its operations. Just like any business, indeed there are going to be definitive concerns.

One of the most frequent risks that you are most liable to come across may be a unsuccessful shipping of products previously prearranged through a sale on your site. Which have been compensated for already by your treasured customers. Being a drop shipper it is anticipated through your customers, for you to follow through with promises made through your company. You have come to be reliant on your wholesale associate to oversee the shipping of the products to your customers.

Furthermore, it will be rather discomforting on your end in view of the fact that you are on the front line. Your buyers assume that you had the products yet you were unable to deliver the products they purchased. This all for the reasons of your wholesale partner being deficient. Many businesses have incurred money fatalities because of this kind of menace and many of them have had to shut the business down due to a vast loss.

Another hazard that you might have to be on your guard about is the defective information given by many websites for wholesales regarding the availability of the items being sold. In some instances, just when you are already conducting transaction with your customer as a drop shipper, only to find the provided online information has been outdated, and on many occasions, has become obsolete, and totally unavailable even as a back order.

Consequently, in order to prevent these risks, dealings must only be made with those extremely regarded and dependable wholesale suppliers. Take instructions and advice from the experiences of others who disastrously omitted to check the honor and character of wholesalers and suffered a hefty money loses in their transactions. Meticulously give weight in researching online before launching your business venture.

Tick Borne Encephalitis – Traveller's Guide

What is tick borne encephalitis and how serious can it be?

Tick borne encephalitis is a viral infection that is transmitted by ticks. A tick can get onto your clothes or skin when you brush past plants, such as long grass, shrubs and bushes. The tick embeds its mouthparts into the skin, but may go unnoticed because anaesthetic in its saliva means the bite does not hurt. If an infected tick bites, the encephalitis virus can pass into the bloodstream. Rarely, people also get it from eating or drinking infected, unpasteurised dairy products.

There are three different types of tick borne encephalitis virus found in various parts of the world. All three viruses can cause encephalitis, which is infection and swelling of the brain. Infected ticks are found on forest fringes, grassland, forest glades, riverside meadows, marshland, woods and shrubberies. The danger from tick borne encephalitis varies depending on the season. Ticks are most active in the spring and summer months. A travel health nurse expert can check the risk in the region you are travelling to – at the time you are travelling.

Tick borne encephalitis symptoms?

7-14 days after being bitten, two thirds of people infected will develop symptoms. Phase one symptoms are:

  • Temperature over 38 ° C or 100.4 ° F
  • Headache
  • Muscle ache
  • Nausea

A period of 1-20 days can follow where the person has no symptoms. Some people (approximately one third) then progress to a second phase where there is a sudden rise in temperature, brain and spinal cord problems. Symptoms can include meningitis, swelling of the brain and sometimes paralysis. People over 60 are most at risk of death.

What to do if you are worried that you've got tick borne encephalitis

You should seek immediate medical attention if you notice any of the signs and symptoms.

Following travel health nurse advice

If a travel health nurse has told you that tick borne encephalitis vaccination is recommended for you, there is no doubt that your travel plans put you at risk from tick borne encephalitis.
If they say you should consider the vaccination you need to weigh-up the risk and cost of the vaccine against the potential risk. Many people prefer to take no chances with their health.

Travel health nurse advice is based on:

  • Whether it is a problem in the place you are travelling to
  • Your chance of coming into contact with the disease
  • The medical facilities available if you were to become infected
  • The duration of your stay

All travel vaccination recommendations can change because of disease outbreaks and seasonal variations, but travel health nurses have access to daily updates and are specialists in travel health services.

Ideally, arrange your vaccinations three-four weeks before travel

The recommended tick borne encephalitis vaccination schedule is three vaccinations given over six months. In practice, this is not always practical and a two-dose regime 14-28 days apart can be used. Approximately 90% of people will develop protection against the disease after this two-dose regime.

If you have made your travel plans late and have less than two weeks before you travel, contact your Travel Clinic immediately. They may be able to recommend an alternative, based on the time available.

Tick borne encephalitis protection: summary of action to be taken

  • Get vaccinated, ideally at least 3-4 weeks before you travel
  • Cover skin with thick clothing if you are walking, camping or working in woodland. Use an effective insect repellent
  • Check your skin regularly for attached ticks. Remove them by grasping the mouthparts with tweezers and pull straight out. Take care not to squeeze the body of the tick
  • Do not eat or drink unpasteurised dairy products
